PANAS score
Positive and Negative Affect Schedule - Average of 10 items (MAP only)
This variable is only available in MAP.
The Positive and Negative Affect Schedule (PANAS) uses 10 questions from the PANAS scales to assess affect in the past week. Participants are asked to respond to each question using a 5-point rating scale (see below), the overall score ranges from 1 to 5 and is the mean of the item scores, with higher scores indicating more negative affect.
Participants are asked the following questions:
Have you felt [items 1-10 below] in the past week?
- distressed
- upset
- guilty
- scared
- hostile
- irritable
- ashamed
- nervous
- jittery
- fearful
Response choices for each question:

Note: If 6 or more items are missing, the overall score is not calculated.
