Presence of possible Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS) is measured using a question modified from the Mayo Sleep Questionnaire (MSQ).
Participants are asked the following question:
During the past month, how often have you had a restless, nervous, tingly, or creepy-crawly feeling in your legs that disrupts your ability to fall or stay asleep?
Participants are asked to report frequency of occurrence using a 5-point scale (see below). The values are then dichotomized and expressed as no RLS = 0 and presence of possible RLS = 1.
Response choices:
Response | Response value | Dichotomized value |
---|---|---|
Not at all | 0 | 0 |
Less than once a week | 1 | 1 |
Once or twice a week | 2 | 1 |
Three or four times a week | 3 | 1 |
Nearly every day | 4 | 1 |
