Maximal expiratory pressure (MEP) is a measure of the strength of the expiratory muscles. MEP is measured in cm H2O using a MicroMouth Pressure Meter MP01 (MicroMedical Ltd., Kent, UK).
Participants are asked to take a deep breath and to seal their lips securely around the mouthpiece of the portable pressure meter. They are then asked to maximally expire and sustain their maximal level for at least one second. Two trials of MEPs are collected for each participant and averaged to obtain a mean.
