Parental education level is a composite measure of maternal education and paternal education levels based on self-report at baseline interview. Participants are asked about the number of years of education completed by each parent. If the exact number is not known for either parent, participants are helped to estimate a value for years of education (see scale below). The composite measure is calculated by averaging the maternal and paternal education levels.
Level of education estimates:
Response | Estimate (in years of education) |
---|---|
No schooling | 0 |
A few years | 3 |
Finished grammar school | 8 |
Any high school | 10 |
Any college | 15 |
