Anger-out
Tendency to outwardly express anger - Sum of 8 items (ROS only)

This variable is only available in ROS.

Anger-out is a measure of the tendency to outwardly express anger. The variable is assessed using 8 items from the State-Trait Anger Expression Inventory.

Participants are asked to respond yes = 1 if the statement describes how they generally feel or no = 0. Anger-out is the number of items answered in the direction indicative of the trait and ranges from 0 to 8, with higher scores indicating a greater tendency to outwardly express anger.

Participants are presented the following items:

When angry or furious...

  1. I express my anger.
  2. I make sarcastic remarks to others.
  3. I do things like slam doors.
  4. I argue with others.
  5. I strike out at whatever infuriates me.
  6. I say nasty things.
  7. I lose my temper.
  8. If someone annoys me, I'm apt to tell him or her how I feel.

Note: If 3 or more items are missing, anger-out is not computed.
