OLFACT device measures

Olfactory function is quantified using the OLFACT Test Battery (Osmic Enterprises, Inc., Cincinnati, OH) and portable olfactometer. The instrument, controlled by software running on a laptop, consists of a case mounted with Teflon tubes which deliver different odorants at varying amounts. Odorants are contained in glass vials with Teflon tubing for each vial attached to the output ports of electronic valves. Valves are attached to a manifold which connects the odorant vial lines to odor delivery tubes. The input port of the manifold is connected to the output of an electric pump. When instructed by the computer software, one of the valves will open (completing the pneumatic circuit) and deliver a precise amount of odorized air through the Teflon tube and to the nose of the participant.
