Cognition

Cognitive function is tested via a battery of 21 cognitive performance tests administered each year. Nineteen of these tests across a range of cognitive abilities are used to construct a global composite measure of cognitive function and separate summary measures of 5 cognitive domains. Eleven tests are used for diagnostic classification.

Subcategories

Global cognition

A composite measure of global cognitive function is derived from a battery of 19 cognitive performance tests.

Global cognitive function Global cognitive function - Average of 19 tests

Domains

Summary measures of 5 cognitive domains are constructed from 19 cognitive performance tests.

Episodic memory Episodic memory domain - Average of 7 tests
Working memory Working memory domain - Average of 3 tests
Semantic memory Semantic memory domain - Average of 3 tests
Perceptual speed Perceptual speed domain - Average of 4 tests
Visuospatial ability/perceptual orientation Visuospatial ability/perceptual orientation domain - Average of 2 tests

Test scores

Individual cognitive performance test scores

Estimated MMSE MMSE, or estimated MMSE score based on MoCA

Self-reported cognitive concerns

Participants' self-reported changes in memory and thinking abilities

Memory trouble Presence of memory complaints

Estimated slopes

Estimated slopes of global cognition and cognitive domains

These variables are derived from two estimated models: one controls for the following demographics, and the other controls for both demographics + pathology. These variables are dynamic: they are dependent upon the specific cohort studies selected, and are updated as new cognitive assessments and neuropathologic examinations are completed.

Demographics: Age at baseline, sex, years of education

Pathology: Global AD pathology burden, amyloid beta, PHF tau tangles, gross chronic cerebral infarctions, chronic microinfarctions, Lewy body disease, TDP-43, hippocampal sclerosis, cerebral amyloid angiopathy, cerebral atherosclerosis, arteriolosclerosis

Random slope of global cognition (demographics) Estimated slope for global cognition controlled for demographics
Random slope of episodic memory (demographics) Estimated slope for episodic memory controlled for demographics
Random slope of working memory (demographics) Estimated slope for working memory controlled for demographics
Random slope of semantic memory (demographics) Estimated slope for semantic memory controlled for demographics
Random slope of perceptual speed (demographics) Estimated slope for perceptual speed controlled for demographics
Random slope of visuospatial ability/perceptual orientation (demographics) Estimated slope for visuospatial ability/perceptual orientation controlled for demographics
Random slope of global cognition (demographics + pathology) Estimated slope for global cognition controlled for demographics and pathology
Random slope of episodic memory (demographics + pathology) Estimated slope for episodic memory controlled for demographics and pathology
Random slope of working memory (demographics + pathology) Estimated slope for working memory controlled for demographics and pathology
Random slope of semantic memory (demographics + pathology) Estimated slope for semantic memory controlled for demographics and pathology

Cognitively-defined AD subgrouping

This data set is available in a subset of ROS and MAP participants and is created by the University of Washington.

The data set includes composite scores for memory, executive functioning, language, and visuospatial ability at the time of first Alzheimer's disease diagnosis.
