Total adverse experience is an assessment of adverse childhood experiences. The scale is based on the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire and other structured questionnaires, focusing on emotional and physical trauma. All questions address experiences during the period of time from birth to 18 years of age. Participants are asked to rate questions related to emotional neglect, financial need, parental intimidation, parental violence, family problems, and family separation. The overall score ranges from 0 to 58 and is the sum of all individual item scores, with higher scores indicating more adverse experience in childhood. See childhood adversity subscale variables for details.
