Medical conditions (summary)
Self-reported medical condition - baseline

Self-reported medical conditions is a composite measure of 7 medical conditions:

  1. Hypertension
  2. Diabetes (based on self-report only)
  3. Heart disease
  4. Cancer
  5. Thyroid disease
  6. Head injury with loss of consciousness
  7. Stroke

Conditions 1-6 are classified based on medical history. A clinical diagnosis of stroke is made based on history, neurological examination, and review of prior brain scan (if available). The composite measure is created by summing the number of conditions present*. These conditions were present in at least 5 percent of persons at baseline.

*Note: only calculated if three or more of the conditions are non-missing.

The total number of conditions present at baseline is used as an index of chronic illness.
