Vascular disease risk factors
Cumulative vascular disease risk factors - Average of 3 items

Vascular Disease Risk Factors is a composite measure of vascular risk burden. The variable is computed using self-report questions on the following 3 items:

  1. Hypertension
  2. Diabetes*
  3. Smoking history**

Each item is given a value of 0 or 1 (see response options below). The score covers a time frame from baseline, including any past history, to the current cycle (i.e., cumulative). The cumulative score for vascular disease risk factors ranges from 0 to 3 and is the total number of items reported. Higher scores indicate higher vascular risk burden.

Response values for each item:

Hypertension

ValueCoding
1Reported in past history or in at least 1 follow-up cycle up to this cycle
0Never reported in past history or in follow-up cycle up to this cycle (includes suspect or possible)

*Diabetes - based on self-report of diabetes or taking diabetes medication.

ValueCoding
1Present - Participant answered "yes" to one or more questions OR reported taking diabetes medication
0No diabetes - Participant answered "suspect or possible"/"no" to all questions and never indicated taking a diabetes medication

**History of smoking (smoke_hx) - based off smoking (never smoked vs. former smoker vs. current smoker) at baseline only.

ValueCoding
1Former or current smoker
0Never smoked
