Restless Legs Syndrome: Severity
Severity of possible Restless Legs Syndrome (Mayo Sleep Questionnaire)

This variable is only available in MAP and MARS.

Severity of possible Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS) is measured using a modified version of the Mayo Sleep Questionnaire (MSQ).

Participants are asked the following questions:

  1. During the past month, how often have your legs repeatedly jerked or twitched during sleep (not just while falling asleep)? Yes, No
  2. During the past month, how often have you had a restless, nervous, tingly, or creepy-crawly feeling in your legs that disrupts your ability to fall or stay asleep? Not at all, Less than once a week, Once or twice a week, Three or four times a week, Nearly every day
  3. Do these leg sensations decrease when you walk around? Yes, No
  4. When do these sensations seem to be the worst? Before 6pm, After 6pm

Participants are asked to answer the questions using options in the table below. Severity of possible RLS ranges from 0 to 10 and is the sum of the four items, with higher scores suggesting the possibility of more severe RLS.
