Restless Legs Syndrome: Screen
Presence of possible Restless Leg Syndrome (Mayo Sleep Questionnaire)

This variable is only available in MAP and MARS.

Presence of possible Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS) is measured using a question modified from the Mayo Sleep Questionnaire (MSQ).

Participants are asked the following question:

During the past month, how often have you had a restless, nervous, tingly, or creepy-crawly feeling in your legs that disrupts your ability to fall or stay asleep?

Participants are asked to report frequency of occurrence using a 5-point scale (see below). The values are then dichotomized and expressed as no RLS = 0 and presence of possible RLS = 1.

Response choices:

Response Response value Dichotomized value
Not at all 0 0
Less than once a week 1 1
Once or twice a week 2 1
Three or four times a week 3 1
Nearly every day 4 1
