Negative social exchange
Frequency of negative social exchange in the past month - Average of 12 items (MAP only)

This variable is only available in MAP.

Frequency of negative social exchange in the past month is measured using 12 questions from a standard psychometrically established scale. The scale addresses 4 domains of negative interaction with 3 items per domain: neglect or reject by others, unwanted intrusion or advice, failure by others to provide help, and unsympathetic or insensitive behavior by others.

Participants are asked to rate the frequency of each scenario in the past month using a 5-point scale (see table below). The overall score ranges from 1 to 5 and is the mean of the item scores. Higher scores indicate more frequent negative social exchange.

Participants are asked the following questions:

In the past month, how often did the people that you know...

  1. give you unwanted advice?
  2. question or doubt your decisions?
  3. interfere or meddle in your personal matters?
  4. let you down when you needed help?
  5. ask for too much help?
  6. fail to give you assistance that you were counting on?
  7. leave you out of activities that you would have enjoyed?
  8. forget or ignore you?
  9. fail to spend enough time with you?
  10. do things that were thoughtless or inconsiderate?
  11. act angry or upset with you?
  12. act unsympathetic or critical about a personal concern of yours?
